Nestled in the heart of Duluth’s East Hillside, Chester Creek Falls offers a serene escape filled with natural beauty and a rich history. The cascading waterfalls of Chester Creek, paired with the surrounding Chester Park, make this spot an ideal destination for hiking, picnicking, and year-round outdoor activities.

The Falls and Trail Experience

The Chester Park Loop spans 2.5 miles along Chester Creek, winding through scenic ravines and offering close-up views of several waterfalls. The trail's elevation can reach up to 50 feet above the creek in some areas, providing incredible vantage points of the falls and the lush surroundings. Small side trails invite visitors to explore the creek’s edge for a closer look at its cascading waters. The loop is rated easy, making it accessible for families and leashed dogs. Visitors should use caution near elevated points and take time to enjoy the views along the way.

Historical Significance

Chester Park was established in 1891, later expanding in 1923 with additional land acquisitions. The park's namesake, Charles Chester, was an early settler who built a cabin near the creek. The area’s geological features, shaped by glaciation and water erosion, reveal ancient igneous rock formations over a billion years old. Red clay deposits throughout the park were once the lakebed of Glacial Lake Duluth, adding another layer of intrigue to the area’s history.
